Why Can't I Skip My Daily Reading?

This famous 1987 study by Nagy and Herman is a staple in every reading/literature teacher’s classroom. I fondly remember the infographic we analyzed during my very first professional development conference as a student teacher. It’s still one of my go-to’s.

  • Which student do you expect to have a better vocabulary? Which student would you expect to be more successful in school—and in life?

  • Fostering a love of reading sets students up for both academic and non-academic success. Try to model nightly reading as a family. Make it a game, create a family book club, or take turns reading aloud to each other (depending on ages).

  • Above all, make reading FUN! Link in our profile for our favorite books listed by grade (for parents, too!)
